L’Osteria—a chain of Italian restaurants that already has over 120 locations in Europe—plans to enter the Polish market. The chain is already present in eight European countries. In its home country of Germany, as well as in France, Austria, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and England.
The chain is expanding its locations through three different concepts. The chain plans to expand into new markets, including Poland, in partnership with franchisees.
This isn’t the first restaurant chain to consider entering the Polish market. The Pesto Cafe chain announced similar plans in mid-2019. In 2018, the 10 largest chains accounted for an estimated 23% share of the foodservice market, which shows that the market remains unconsolidated. Currently, the market is dominated by two companies—McDonald’s and AmRest. They have the largest number of locations as well as the highest average revenue. Other typical players are merely background players. On the other hand, however, there is still room for new players in this rapidly growing market.
According to a survey conducted for the report “The HoReCa Market in Poland 2019” in December 2018, respondents asked about the types of dining establishments they feel are missing from the market expressed a fondness for milk bars. In this context, 37% of respondents mentioned these types of establishments (most often those aged 55 and older and from small households). Restaurants serving traditional Polish cuisine and those offering exotic, oriental cuisines are the types of establishments that about 30% of respondents feel are missing from the market. Residents of rural areas and small towns are particularly likely to point out the lack of such establishments, while residents of the largest cities are significantly less likely to indicate a need for them.
