Analysis of the Cloud Computing and Data Center Market in 5 Countries of Central and Eastern Europe

For one of Europe’s largest telecommunications operators, our team conducted a comprehensive analysis of the cloud computing and data center market in selected countries in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe: Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Slovakia, and Hungary. The project involved both quantitative and qualitative research, and its goal was to provide the client with reliable information on market potential, competition, and trends shaping the cloud and data center industries in the region.

Project Objectives

The client, an active player in the data center market, needed comprehensive information about the markets in which it operates. PMR’s task was to:

  • Analysis of the competitive landscape in the data center market—identification of the key players, their market positions, and planned investments.
  • Determining market size based on key performance indicators (KPIs): facility capacity (MW), net and gross floor area (m²), and revenue.
  • An analysis of trends in the cloud computing and data center markets—with a particular focus on the impact of the geopolitical situation (the war in Ukraine, rising energy prices).
  • Gaining insight into the attitudes of business customers—understanding the needs, motivations, and expectations of companies that use cloud and data center services.
  • Identification of the major players in the data center market and their investment plans for the coming years.

Project Details

As part of the project, PMR carried out the following:

  • 20 in-depth interviews (IDIs) with cloud and data center service providers (integrators, service providers, telecommunications operators), which provided an in-depth understanding of the supply-side perspective.
  • Quantitative research (CAWI and CATI) conducted on a total sample of 500 companies (demand side) across five countries in the region, which made it possible to collect detailed data on the expectations and preferences of business customers.
  • Desk research – an analysis of available sources and market data used to calculate key indicators describing the size and structure of the market in each country.

The collected data was used to develop five-year forecasts for the growth of the cloud and data center markets, taking into account both sector-specific factors and the macroeconomic environment in each of the countries studied.

Project Results

As a result of our research, we have prepared:

  • 5 dedicated reports—detailed analyses of the cloud and data center markets for each of the countries surveyed.
  • Strategic Report – A comparison of individual markets in terms of potential, competition, and trends.
  • Executive One-Pager – Key Findings and Recommendations in Summary Form.
  • A database containing time series and forecasts for 2023–2027, describing the cloud computing and data center markets, as well as the broader context—the value of the IT market and a set of macroeconomic data for each of the five countries.
  • Database of quantitative research results—the complete set of data collected during the project.

What did our client gain?

The PMR project enabled the client to:

  • A better understanding of the structure and dynamics of the cloud and data center market in the CEE/SEE region.
  • Identification of key trends and factors influencing the industry's development, including the impact of the geopolitical and macroeconomic situation.
  • Building a competitive advantage through knowledge of the competition, investment plans, and the expectations of business customers.
  • More effective planning of development and investment strategies for the coming years.

Summary

PMR’s analysis of the cloud computing and data center market provides a solid foundation for strategic decision-making by leaders in the telecommunications and IT industries. Thanks to a comprehensive research approach and practical recommendations, the client has gained the tools needed for dynamic growth and to build a strong position in the cloud and data center markets in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.
